From Rome to L’Aquila - Vigliano the car is essential. We recommend hiring it at the airport in Rome.
From Rome you take the motorway A24 to L'Aquila-Teramo, exit L'Aquila Ovest. After you take the street on the rigth, the street 17 to Rieti, you drive straight and after the villages Sassa, Civitatomassa, Madonna della Strada you will arrive in Vigliano. The entry of it is on the rigth of the street. You must drive under an ancient arc.

A special attraction in Abruzzo are the isolated silent churches, dotted here and there in a green and peaceful countryside, and mainly Romanesque. These include San Giovanni al Mavone, Santa Maria di Propezzano, San Clemente al Vomano, Santa Maria di Ronzano in the Province of Teramo; Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta, at the foot of Mount Velino, and San Paolo di Peltuino, near the remains of the ancient town of Vestini 'Peltuinum' in the Province of L’Aquila; Santa Maria del Lago, Sant'Angelo, San Clemente a Casauria (beautiful three-arched portico) and the Gothic-Cistercian abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, rebuilt in the 12th-13th centuries with Cistercian forms in the Province of Pescara.
There are also some attractions of archeological interest. Important settlements include Alba Fucens, at the foot of Mount Velino, a thriving Roman town; Aminterumi, near L’Aquila, ancient Sabine centre; Iuvanum, within sight of the Maiella Frentaro settlement. A further reason for staying in this region is to visit the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, one of the five national parks in Italy, with an extraordinary wealth of interesting flora and fauna. L’architettura del paese è soprattutto in pietra tipica dei luoghi di montagna.
Sullo sfondo vi è una cava di rena bianca.
Affacciandosi alla finestra lo scenario che appare sia durante l’inverno con la neve che durante l’estate è davvero spettacolare. Infatti è possibile godere di un bellissimo panorama delle principali vette dell’Appennino: dal Gran Sasso al Monte Velino, all’Altopiano delle Rocche.

Museums – Art:  The region is rich in remains of the Roman civilization, which can be found at Minternum near L'Aquila, Alba Fucens, Iuvanum and Montenero. Art saw its most creative periods during the Middle Ages. Noteworthy cathedrals and abbeys, with a patent local imprint, were erected between the eleventh and the nineteenth century. The most important example is Santa Maris di Collemaggio, in L'Aquila. Sculpture attained a special development. An important and typical goldsmith's craft, which produced splendid objects, dates back to the sixteenth century. Precious Renaissance examples can be found in Sulmona and L'Aquila.
In L’Aquila, one can visit the National Museum of Abruzzi, with sections in palaeontology, archaeology and medieval art (painting, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, lace, sacred ornaments, glass, windows). Pescara has the Museum of the Folk Traditions of Abruzzo, which holds a didactic archaeological exhibition. The Pinacoteca Civica in Teramo displays beautiful majolica. Chieti's National Museum of Antiquities houses important relics of the ancient Italics, Greeks and Romans, including some remarkable pieces such as the Warrior of Capestrano, of the fourth century B.C..

FOOD
All Italians consider food to be very important, and Abruzzo is no exception. Here are some of the local specialities that you may encounter:

  1. Spaghetti alla chitarra (square strands of pasta served with a tomato sauce)
  2. Fagioli e cotiche di maiale (stewed beans and pork rind)
  3. Prosciutto di cinghiale (wild boar ham)
  4. Testicoli di mulo (small round lean pork sausages; not made from testicles, just named after them as they are always sold in pairs)
  5. Pecorino d'Abruzzo (local sheep's cheese)
  6. Burrata (a truly rare delicacy - a ball of tangy cheese with a soft buttery center)
